Why do cats have the zoomies?

If your real cat races around the house at top speed — especially at night — you’re witnessing what’s officially called Frenetic Random Activity Periods, or FRAPs. It’s a completely normal behavior that helps cats release pent-up energy, practice predatory instincts, and burn off stress.

Indoor cats are especially prone to nighttime zoomies because they have fewer opportunities to hunt and explore. Want to help your cat channel that energy more constructively? Read our guides on cat stress and enrichment →
